DIY Clay Wall Hanging

Clay Wall hangings! They have become such an obsession, and I am guilty for it myself. It is EVERYWHERE on Pinterest and Instagram. Another super hot trend is the #trashtoterracota method i.e., mixing baking soda with paint to bring that terracotta clay texture. When I found this wall hanging design on Anthropologie – I’ve decided to make one myself combining clay and the paint and baking soda technique! I’ve styled it as a wall piece but you could turn it into a modern wind chime for your patio, or attach the smaller version from the bottom of a hanging planter.

What I love about working with polymer clay is how easy it is to shape it! Check out my other DIY projects made with polymer clay. You can make anything you like and redo it from scratch if you don’t like it!

Materials:

Steps:

  • I decided on a simple design with some full circles and some semi-circles, drew the shapes on paper, and cut them.
  • Layout your design template so that you get a complete idea about how much clay to roll out.
  • Roll out the clay until soft on a piece of parchment paper.
  • Cut the shapes according to your template (or redo them until you are happy with them). You can also use cookie cutters, lids, or bowls to cut perfect circles.
  • Align the pieces according to your layout and make holes to run a string or a wire through them, using a toothpick or clay cutters.
  • Bake the clay according to the instructions on the clay packaging.
  • Once baked, let all the pieces cool.
  • Mix 1 part paint and half part baking soda until you like the texture. I’ve mixed up a light peach/coral terracotta tone color for this piece.
  • Paint all the shapes.
  • Using wire cutters, make jump rings and start connecting all the shapes. Twist the wire together at the back to secure.
  • We can also use the rings that are used in jewelry making. Other great options would be – running a piece of thread or the same yarn we are going to use in the next step for the tassel.
  • Make a tassel using yarn and attach it to the last piece.
  • On the top, I attached a key chain ring to hang it to the wall, but we could also create a small loop with the yarn and hot glue it on the backside.
  • I styled it in my living room along with some pampas grass!

I hope you’ll try making one and don’t forget to share it with me!
