DIY Winter Throw Pillow

With the winter season in full swing and amongst the millions of holiday decoration ideas, I wanted to make something that could stay for the whole season, rather than just until Christmas eve. I wanted to make a throw pillow that feels more seasonally appropriate. I wanted the pattern to be simple, as I planned to add woolen tassels on the sides! I narrowed down on this leaf motif as it has a very wintery whimsical feeling to it. The woolen tassels on the sides add texture and flair.

Use an old pillow cover or a new one, paint it with a fun color for the base, and you’re only one step away from a DIY winter accent pillow to adorn your couch. Let’s get started.

Materials:

  • Old Cushion cover
  • Small piece of cardboard or newspapers
  • Paint Brush
  • Paint (Acrylic or fabric)
  • Leaf Stamps
  • Yarn for tassels
  • Hot glue gun
  • Cushion

Steps:

  • Iron out and place the fabric flat on your work area. Slide in a section of cardboard and place it under the area you plan on painting/stamping.
  • My pillow cover was a yellowy beige, so I wanted to change the base color first, so I painted the whole area with two shades of brown separated by a diagonal. This step is completely optional if you already have the fabric in the color you love. However, if you plan to paint the whole fabric (with acrylic paint), you might have to add a fabric medium to the acrylic paint, else the paint would make the fabric stiff.
  • Mine is just for decorative purposes and neither did I have the intention of washing it, so I went ahead with acrylic paint.
  • Let the fabric completely dry.
  • Next, squeeze a small amount of white fabric paint on a paper plate and dip in the leaf stamp or brush some paint on the stamp using a paintbrush. I stuck the stamp on to a cardboard box in order to hold and press it easily.
  • Don’t add too much paint to the stamp and it would make your print look bulky.
  • Press the stamp on the pillowcase.
  • I love the faded look of the print on the fabric, and in areas where the leaf is hardly visible I went ahead and filled it in.
  • Go around with the stamp over the entire pillow. Let everything dry.
  • Make tassels as many as required. I chose white wool to add texture and bring in coziness for the winter season.
  • I hot glued in the tassels, but you can also stitch them in.
  • Stuff up the pillow using stuffing or a pillow.

It’s ready to be styled on your fave seat as a solo accent piece, or mix and match with coordinating or contrasting pillows!

How big is your throw pillow collection? How often do you change them? Season, month, a week? Let me know in the comments.
