DIY jute wall baskets

Pinterest is overflowing with these globally-styled jute/rattan wall baskets these days, I drew inspiration from them and DIYed this jute decorative wall piece set! I’ve incorporated designs inspired by mudcloth, tribal patterns, resulting in eye-catching modern boho pieces for any space in your home!

Spin it into a glam, boho-inspired piece to your get-ready station instantly by attaching it to any base – a luxe marble dish at the bottom to display your little accessories like earrings, rings, and brooches! Perfect on a nightstand, dresser, or vanity! I am using a marble coaster that I already had at hand! I am all into repurpose and recycle! I love an item that finds a balance between decor and function!

Additionally, this prettiest boho basket can also be designed as your favorite photo holder or tabletop decor! Perfect on a coffee table, or nightstand + more!

Another fantastic idea, taking cues from the sun motif in the center, is to attach a round mirror and turn it into a vanity mirror by leaving a larger space in the center!

What you need:

  • Jute twine – Craft store
  • White paint – I tested painting with white nail polish and learned that acrylic or a chalk paint works best, as you might have to give more than one coat of your design
  • Thin paintbrush
  • Cardboard
  • Hot glue gun
  • X-Acto knife
    For base:
  • A coaster, butter dish, saucer or similar
  • A stick/dowel

How to make it:

  • With a pencil draw the template you want to cut the cardboard, I used a snack plate and a lid to make the disc shape.
  • Cut the cardboard in shape, and use xacto knife for the center hole.
  • Start at the center and start gluing the twine and continue wrapping the rope in a circle, hot gluing it down to the cardboard.
  • Keep wrapping the string until you make it to the edge and then work towards the outside of the disc.
  • Once done, cut the twine and glue the finishing end to the back of the basket.
  • Let dry and hop onto the fun part, paint!!! 💃🏻🎨
  • This was my first time painting over jute, so I experimented with all my options, but because the twine has a lot of hairs coming out of it it was difficult to make a design with the nail polish. The acrylic color was a lot brighter and settled well, so I decided to go with acrylic paint.
  • Go over Pinterest and find a design that you like and is easy to make. Keep in mind you may have to go around for a second coat!
  • Let the paint dry, and it’s set for wall mount! No additional hanging loop is needed as the disc is already hollow.
  • Bonus step: attach some charming pompom with string or glue

For the base and the stand:

  • Use a dowel and twist some more jute twine around it and stick it on the back of the disc.
  • Hot glue it onto your base, and you are done!

I caaaan’t get enough of the versatility of these baskets and is just one of the many reasons you have to try making them! Use them as a catch-all, photo stand, vanity mirror, show-piece, or simply hang them on your wall! Let me know what you loved most about this wall art set, and what more ways we could use this set as! 😇
