DIY framed placemat

An elegant modern piece of wall art with an eye-catching ornate design; it is airy and rustic, a look that is great for a California coastal chic aesthetic in your interiors. The minimalistic rose gold palette adds a contemporary feel to the piece’s beautiful design. It could be a part of your gallery wall, entryway decor, above dressers, or fill in any gaps in your wall decor!

Switch up the border to a gold frame to get luxe look; the shiny intricate detail will glam up your bedside corners! Make it a 3 piece vertical set to go over a thin wall. Use a circular or an oval-shaped frame! Ideas are endless! I wanted it to be the chic element of my brown/beige gallery wall aesthetic. It is stunning displayed individually or as a triptych!

Inspiration is from this wooden wall piece from All Modern. As soon as I saw this, I just knew that this has to happen! 😀 I immediately remembered where I saw a similar design to this! When I was looking cute placemats for this modern jute rug piece, I discovered placemats from Walmart/Target, which would work amazing for this! You won’t believe this DIY wall decor cost me less than $10 to make! So grab a pretty placemat and a wooden frame, and lets started!!

What you need:

  • A placemat with a design! Mine, similar, similar
  • 8×10 picture frame, or a canvas wooden frame that fits the placemat fully
  • 2 wooden dowels (optional, if using a canvas frame). Similar
  • Chalk/acrylic paint or gold paint
  • Paintbrush
  • Scissors, pen
  • Hot glue gun
  • Sandpaper (optional, if your wooden frame needs sanding). Similar

How to make it:

  • Tear up an old canvas, and pull the wooden frame from it, or use an 8×10 photo frame
  • Sand the frame you the paint sticks on it better (optional)
  • Paint the frame, and while it’s half dry, wipe/sand away any excess paint, some color from the corners to achieve a rustic look.
  • Let dry fully.
  • Lay the placemat upside down and place the frame on it.
  • Next, trace along the outside of the frame onto the placemat, and cut it out.
  • Start trimming down the excess placemat by trying to fit it inside the frame.
  • If using a picture frame, hot glue the placemat into the interior of the frame. However, for a wooden frame, as there was no base to glue the placemat, I took the help of 2 wooden sticks and glued them along the border of the frame and secured the mat onto them.

That’s all for it! Spruce up any space with this easy and fast DIY rustic wooden wall piece! Show me how you styled your space with it! Leave a comment and let me know!
